Principal’s Flyer #29: March 16, 2025

Dear Students & Families:

Congratulations this week goes out to our Mu Alpha Theta 2025 inductees, who were inducted on Friday 3/14 (Pi Day!) for their excellence in and dedication to the study of mathematics.  You can see our 2025 inductees pictured here, and also here with Mu Alpha Theta active members.  Not only do Mu Alpha Theta members pursue and excel in the rigorous studies of mathematics, they also promote the inclusion of math into daily life and help make it fun during Pi Day week, with activities like scavenger hunts and Pi Day-themed games, they also tutor and support peers in their support of mathematics, and wear a mean Pi-Day T-Shirt as well.  Thank you to Mu Alpha-Theta advisor Ms. Richard for coordinating, and to Table Talk Pies, Inc out of Worcester, which has donated hundreds of pies to our school over the years on Pi-Day to support the fun celebration of Pi Day and the celebration of Mathematics.  Congratulations to our 2025 Mu Alpha Theta Inductees!

Mikaela Winslow, Saya Lantigua, Kailyn Massicotte, Alyssa Jennings, Amanda Iannacone, Alaina Gallagher, Dani DiSalle, James Cavaleri, Annika Bethge-Haynl, Hunter Barlow, Brayden Weitknecht, Gianna Manca, and Cody Ardinger

Kudos also goes out to Early College Students for their participation last week in support and advocacy for Early College education and the Massachusetts State House on Beacon Hill!  Ruby Tower-Hughes, Isabelle Leano, Maxim Kauffman, and Preston Denio-O’Connor joined students from Gardner, Athol, Fitchburg, and schools around the state to advocate for Early College programming to state legislators and executive branch leaders.  This outstanding group of students represented our program well, which has awarded hundreds of college credits to students at no-cost to NRHS students and families.  Bravo to our Warriors for their academic excellence, and thank you to Ms. Donnelly (NRHS), Ms. Vettese (MWCC), Ms. Forhan (MWCC), Ms. Bowen (MWCC), and Mr. Garcia-Rodriguez (FSU) for first-class support of Early College students and families.  Here are just a few pictures of our students on Beacon Hill:

Reminder: Important Updates to State Testing: MCAS

A new law passed in December 2024 that removes the MCAS as a graduation requirement. However, students are still required to sit for the exam.  As we’ve written previously, the state will still hold our school accountable and also uses MCAS to determine student scholarships and other opportunities, so we will be prepared to hold the exam and return to our regular class schedule as normal on MCAS days. Grade 10 students and families are advised that sophomores will take MCAS on March 25th and 26th.  Students and families are reminded to save the date for upcoming MCAS testing.   For updates regarding MCAS and changes to graduation requirements, please see our previous update intended to help explain the status of MCAS testing for high school students (including grade 8).  Testing this spring will be held on the following dates, and we will inform students of their MCAS room assignments.

Grade 10 ELA MCAS - March 25th & March 26th

Grade 8 ELA MCAS - April 9th & April 10th

Grade 8 STE MCAS - April 29th & April 30th

Grade 8 Civics MCAS - May 1st & May 2nd

Grade 8 Math MCAS - May 6th & May 7th

Grade 10 Math MCAS - May 20th & May 21st
