Principal’s Flyer #35: May 5, 2024

Principal’s Flyer #35: May 5, 2024

Dear Students & Families:

To begin our update this week, we’d like to say thank you to the many staff, chaperones, volunteers, and agencies that came out in support of our “GAAP” Day prom/graduation season season safety last Thursday.  Thank you foremost to our local police departments and fire departments, the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, Alyssa’s Place speakers, Massachusetts State Police, The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) as well as our own cafeteria, custodial, and counseling team for making an impactful event happen.

As part of GAAP day, students experienced everything from careers and opportunities in CERT, to how bloodhounds are trained and careers, to the Sheriff’s Office Mobile Command unit, to how to navigate a traffic stop and the importance of sobriety, safe driving, how to sustain healthy relationships, and the importance of safety in avoiding life-altering mistakes during celebratory seasons.  Special thanks to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office for its grant and support of this event, Sheriff Evangelidis for joining us, and, again, to our local law enforcement and emergency services for being thoughtful in how to develop skills and awareness our students will take with them into their adult lives.  Finally, special thank you to Ann Lyons, who has coordinated this event as a passion project on behalf of our students.   Thank you to all involved for creating an intentional, impactful, and engaging experience for our students.

As many of our community members and participants remarked during and leading up to this day, we’d like our families to know that we take the charge of student safety incredibly seriously.  Thanks one last time to all involved for helping safeguard our young people and equip them going forward with understandings they may rely on as adults.  Please find some pictures of our event “stations” below, and we wish our students a wonderful junior/senior prom!

And now in celebration of prom week and a vibrant May generally, we’d like to share that this week we’ll hold a prom spirit week.  Students, please find the days below.  Additionally, all families are advised that May 6th, Monday is our progress report / midpoint of term 4.  Please do visit our community portal on Tuesday to check in on your student’s up-to-date progress.

Finally, Coach Donovan would like to celebrate our senior baseball players, Anthony Hebert, Zachary Lottig, Charles Ogonowski, Joseph Pineyro, and Spencer Stratford.  Even if you missed the senior game, we hope you’ll come out to a ballgame and watch our teams compete.  Bravo to the seniors, and do check the athletics calendar at the bottom of our weekly updates for our busy athletic season information.

On Friday, May 24, 2024, beginning at 1:15 PM, the Narragansett High School and Middle Schools will hold a Memorial Day Observance in Elinor J. The program is essentially the same format as the one at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Winchendon.  This year’s guest speaker will be Rep. Jonathan Zlotnik, who has participated in many observances at the Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery in Winchendon.

The public is invited to this event.  The facility is handicapped accessible. Veterans are encouraged to wear insignia showing their branch of service.  For more information, please contact Principal Colby Young of Narragansett High School at 978-939-5388 (cyoung@nrsd.org).  Please click here for a copy of our press release.
