Principal’s Flyer #34: April 28, 2024

Dear Students & Families:

We hope you’ve enjoyed some (hard earned) spring-like weather this weekend, with warmer temperatures making it easier to get out and about.  Thank you to the many people out on the roadways and who came to school to welcome back the Grand Nationals Champion Cheer Team last Monday.  The number of folks supporting the team is a testament to the team and its outreach to many families, and also the support of numerous community members of our cheer program.  Here’s a video of the team returning with a police and fire escort last Monday afternoon.  Thank you to our police and fire departments for bringing our team back to the school in style!

Bravo today goes out this evening to our tech crew, cast members, and incredible supporters of the Narragansett Theater Guild for its wonderful performance of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream this weekend!  Truly, this group of passionate and extremely dedicated students has navigated a multitude of unforeseen challenges to this year’s production with tremendous grace and effort.  We commend our cast and crew for your talent and courage in performing for the community.  Sunday’s performance capped off a wonderful play. Thank you to all…and special thank you goes out to our play Director, Mr. Garrett Schlundt, who takes both the responsibility for putting on a play and ensuring that seniors have a final opportunity to perform personally.  Thank you also to Ms. Heather Niemczura, and our contingent of parent volunteers for your expertise and time supporting this production.

Most importantly, please find pictures of the play as well as the program, below.  Bravo, Theater Guild!!

GAAP Day 2024: Thursday, May 2nd

For many years, NRHS has endeavored to empower our graduating seniors - and young people widely - with the ability to make sound decisions as the weather warms up and the celebrations of prom and graduation begin.  In recent years, Ms. Ann Lyons has pursued and been awarded grants from the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office for the purpose of expanding our program to reach more students (juniors and seniors) with further perspectives of our community stakeholders who care about the immediate and long-term safety of our young people.

This year will be our most comprehensive event we’ve run to date.  This coming Thursday, NRHS will close the front parking lot of the Middle School / High School complex to accommodate an interactive simulation by the state police, demonstrations of accident scenes by local fire, simulations for navigating traffic safety and emergency scenarios by our local police, discussions of poor choices, healthy relationships, and recovery by guest speakers, as well as a virtual presentation to our families regarding Massachusetts Social Host Laws.

This Thursday NRHS will be joined by the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office, Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, local police and fire departments, as well as community organizations (Alyssa’s Place, and Pathways for Change)...all with the intention of promoting the safety and well-being of our students and community.  Much like the support of our Theater Guild and Cheer Team, it has been staggering to see the care, resources, and effort our local and state agencies will bring to bear in educating and safeguarding our young people.

Thank you in advance to everyone for your support of this event, and for your patience on Thursday as we change our parking plan to accommodate a number of agencies and personnel coming to NRHS.  Students, thanks in advance for enjoying the day and engaging thoughtfully and responsibility in the interactive activities provided to you.  Here are a just a few logistics to be aware of -

  • Early this week, NRHS will send reminder instructions to MS / HS staff regarding where to park on Thursday

  • Families are advised that busing and drop off parents will proceed as normal (drop-off in the horseshoe, buses in back…but please expect local traffic to move a bit more slowly on this day)

  • Families are advised that the number of police and emergency services equipment will be present in our main parking lot.  This is NOT an emergency but rather a planned interactive series of safety demonstrations for students.

  • We will post several reminders and updates on the day on social media, and alert families as to the time and information to join virtually the District Attorney’s virtual presentation of Massachusetts Social Hosting Law and other guidance for families (Thursday evening).

Thank you again to Ms. Lyons, our police and fire departments for their tremendous support of our students and GAAP Day 2024!
