Principal’s Flyer #32: April 7, 2024
Dear Students & Families:
We hope you’ve been able to shake off the spring snow storm and enjoy a wonderful weekend…with a few spring-like days ahead! Given the snow day last Thursday, the final day of school for NRHS students this year will now be Thursday, June 13th. As we look toward this week, please be reminded that the NRHS will be on vacation the week of April 15th through the 19th. This week our schedule is as follows:
Monday (4/8) full school day and Tuesday (4/9) are full school days
Wednesday (4/10) and Thursday (4/11) are half day, dismissals at 11:10 AM with family conferences scheduled from 11:45 AM - 2:30 PM.
Friday will be a half day professional development day with dismissal at 11:10 AM.
A reminder to all families that the conference sign up window closes tonight at 11:59 PM. Please refer to this document for all information regarding conference times, how to sign up, and all related information. Our staff looks forward to seeing you!
We’d like to congratulate the 50+ Warrior Mathematicians who participated on Friday in the Elizabeth Haskins Math Competition! Kudos to Aidan Liang, Madyson Hemlin, and Katherine Longmuir for receiving honorable mentions, and the NRHS comprising more than 25% of the competitors at the math competition! In addition to being tasked with solving 50 higher order math problems, NRHS students met with Fitchburg State faculty, and unpacked challenging problems with professors for the FSU math department. Bravo to our scholars, and thanks to our chaperones and Ms. Richard for making this event possible for our students!
Solar Eclipse Safety Tips for April 8th (2:00 PM - 4:30 PM) |
A solar eclipse, a rare celestial event, will grace our skies on Monday, April 8th, from 2:00 - 4:30 pm. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk as the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. The last solar eclipse we experienced was in August of 2017; before that, it was in 1979. We won't witness another solar eclipse for 21 years! This is a unique opportunity for your child to witness a natural wonder. Please speak with your child and educate them about the following:
The sun will be dangerously bright even when partially covered by the moon. It will not be safe to look at the sun during that time without special-purpose solar filters that comply with ISO 12312-2 international standard for filters for direct solar viewing! Looking at the sun without the proper solar filters can lead to retinal damage that can be permanent.
DO NOT:
Look at the sun through sunglasses. Sunglasses will not protect your eyes!
Use homemade filters to look directly at the sun.
View the sun through the welder’s glass
View the sun through your camera viewfinder
View through a telescope or camera without the proper solar filter (even if you have eclipse glasses on)
View through binoculars
Please watch this quick 3-minute video, 5 Safe Ways To View The Eclipse, for ways to view the solar eclipse indirectly if you do not have solar filters. NASA.gov also has a lot of information, including a list of American Astronomical Society Approved suppliers of safe solar viewers and filters.
We will not have another eclipse for 21 years! Be safe, follow the safety tips, and enjoy this rare event. Please contact the Principal of your child’s school if you have any concerns.
