Principal’s Flyer #28: March 10, 2024 (v3.14159…)
Dear Students & Families:
We hope you are excited about the one hour of sleep lost as it signals more impending sunshine in the evenings and the onset of warmer weather. Congratulations to our varsity boys and girls hockey teams, as well as basketball teams on outstanding seasons, in which our teams made the playoffs and handed higher playoff seeds upsets before defeat in the playoffs. A reminder that athletics registration is open now but closes soon, don’t delay in signing up for spring sports!
This week we are celebrating our varsity cheer team, which competes at Worcester State University today in States! If you don’t already know, this team is supported by numerous parent volunteers and also puts on outstanding cheer camps for the next generation of prospective, future Warrior Cheerleaders. Thank you also to Coach Meghan Hazelton and Coach Gabby O’Malley on their mentorship of our outstanding student athletes.
Thank you also goes out to Ms. Katie Verville, who coordinated a talk on health and substance abuse prevention with the Worcester County Sheriff's Office Sheriff Lew Evangelidis, who came out and spoke to our 9th and 10th graders personally last week. Sheriff’s Evengelidis’ staff were complimentary of our 9th and 10th graders’ attention. As always, we appreciate our communities’ ongoing support when we message positive decision-making, prevention, and awareness with NRHS students. Especially as our dance, prom, and graduation season begin to approach, we appreciate everyone’s vigilance and support in safeguarding our young people. Finally, thank you also to Annika Bethge-Haynl and Ms. Kelly Calamari for a fun international week last week; the additional food and culture is always appreciated first thing in the morning!
Situational Awareness Training: Talks with Teachers on Tuesday, March 12th |
As previously shared with you, NRHS teachers will facilitate talks with students about situational awareness and how to respond in the event of an emergency and intruder on our campus or in our community. Similar to many schools, NRHS uses the ALICE school safety protocol, which essentially empowers and prepares students (and adults) to respond to emergency situations in a school setting or out in the community. Please note that TES and NMS have engaged in similar, age appropriate conversations, and NRHS will do so this Tuesday. Our talks with students will be age appropriate and led by familiar adults students know. These situational awareness talks are not drills but are important.
Whenever we consider school safety, we thank our Police and Fire Departments for their support and expertise in advising our school district. And we will re-share with you Dr. Casavant’s letter regarding school safety and preparedness in Narragansett Regional School District.
If any student or family has any question regarding school safety or our talks this coming Tuesday, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at (cyoung@nrsd.org) (mlandry@nrsd.org) or at 978-939-5388.
