Principal’s Flyer #2: August 27, 2023

Dear Students & Families:

The 2023-2024 School Year is upon us!  We wish you a warm welcome back.  And if the meteorologists are to be believed we’re in for a temperate first day of school tomorrow, August 28th! We’re going to keep this memo brief so you can focus on the essential information…But know that in short, we are incredibly excited to receive your students tomorrow and are collectively “ready” for a great day and year ahead!

Schedules and NRHS School Day

You’ll remember that our school day begins at 7:45 AM and concludes at 2:20 PM on full school days.  Here is our bell schedule (also linked above).  This week school runs Monday through Thursday, with students being off (no school) on Friday (9/1) and Monday (9/4) in honor of the Labor Day Holiday.  On our first day of school tomorrow morning we will follow and explain to students our modified schedule, which accounts for an afternoon Welcome Back pep rally.   Students should proceed to their A Block class upon arrival at school.

Pickup-Drop Off

If you are new to NRHS and or need to remember, please take a look at our pickup-drop off map for any questions regarding AM / PM transportation.  If you/your child takes the bus, then be advised bus route information can be found here.  As always, we’ll have staff out front and at bus drop-off to guide you.

Special Note: NRHS front doors are open to drop-off students as early as 7:15 AM.  Please arrive early if it is helpful to your family schedule and/or students’ getting breakfast.  Students who are repeatedly tardy to school will need to make up time after school and subject to possible credit loss.   Attendance and punctuality at school are a major point of emphasis for NRHS this academic year.

Lunch & Lunch Schedules

Teachers and administrators will review student lunch schedules on the first day of school.  Massachusetts has passed legislation ensuring universally free lunch this year.  Students will attend lunches according to their F block class.  Again, this schedule will be reviewed with students on Day 1.

Student Schedules & Requesting Changes

Schedules for All HS Students have been released in the Community Portal.  Please note that counselors work through scheduling adjustments and requests as expeditiously as possible.  The easiest way for a student to check a schedule is to:

  • Visit the community portal and click on your student’s name

  • Click on the class to see the course and block

A few notes regarding schedules: high school schedules are complex given the number of electives, AP, Early College, STEAM, Academic Coaching, Co-Taught, Internship and other unique selections as well as our obligation to adhere to MassCore Guidelines and State Graduation Requirements.  If and as you reach out counselors be advised that:

  • Grade 9 and 10 students have very limited choices in terms of electives given they are scheduled to fulfill mandatory requirements set by the state

  • Students with the last name beginning A-K, your counselor is Ms. Donnelly.

  • Students with the last name beginning L-Z, your counselor is Ms. Jasinski.

  • Counselors will answer your questions in the order they are received and as quickly as possible

Don’t know your schedule?  We will have physical copies of schedules on hand for students in the front lobby on the first day of school.  Students should go to the main lobby when they arrive at school if they do not have or do not know their schedule.

Don’t know where a classroom is? Numerous students, student leaders, and teachers can help you if you have a schedule, but don’t know where to go.  Just ask! Teachers will be out and about in the hallways to help.

Schedule Change? Students seeking a schedule change should ask for a pass from their academic teacher, and check in with Ms. McAuliffe about any prospective change.  If a change is possible, Ms. McAuliffe will help get you an add-drop form.   Add drop runs for the first two weeks of school.

Student Family Handbooks

On August 14th,  High School parents/guardians were sent a message from schoolbrains@nrsd.org with information for accessing the community portal, and instructions for reviewing and signing off on our student and family handbook.   Thank you for reviewing and signing off on the handbook at your earliest convenience.  This step is essential to ensuring your child’s participation in events and extracurricular activities as well as NRSD use of technology is not interrupted.  Please note: the notice you receive in your email will look very similar to this message.

  • You can request to update your contact information through the portal if you need to do so.

  • If you are having any difficulty finding your login credentials, we can resend them to you; please contact the main office or Dylan Oxford (doxford@nrsd.org).

Beginning of Year Forms (BOY Forms)

With the exception of the handbook, BOY forms will be sent home with your students early this week.  Please review these forms carefully, as information regarding everything from military recruitment opt-out, social media opt-out, medication, and dental care forms will be included in this packet.  All packets will come home to you through your students in paper-form.
