Principal’s Flyer #1: August 14, 2023
Dear Students & Families:
Welcome to our first weekly memo, or “Principal's Flyer” for the 2023-2024 school year. Thank you for taking a moment to read our Welcome Letter for this upcoming school year. During the coming weeks and when our school year is in session, you will receive a weekly newsletter from us which captures key dates, events, celebrations of students and staff, as well as important information that will be helpful to you as we navigate what we anticipate to be an outstanding school year together.
Banner & Active Links
Given the number of celebrations, events, opportunities and frequency of important information characteristic of high school life, we’ll do our best to keep all information you might need at your fingertips. And while we do post information on our NRHS Warriors High School Facebook page and under Live Events on our NRHS webpage, you will also find the information you need to keep current on NRHS here in your memos each week. To familiarize you with our banner, you will find the following links:
The School Calendar links you to our district MS/HS calendar. In the banner of each memo, our Bell Schedule shows our school day “block schedule”/when classes are held. Students and families are advised that school begins promptly at 7:45 AM each morning. The student day concludes at 2:20 PM on a regular school day.
Our Pick up/Drop Off Routines are linked here and in the banner of this memo, and please be advised that:
Classes begin each morning promptly at 7:45 AM
Students being dropped off by families will pull into the front horseshoe of the MS/HS building complex
Students taking the bus will drop off in the back parking lot. NRSD Central Office will post and update the Bus Routes on our NRSD webpage.
Important Beginning of the Year Dates
The first official day of school is Monday, August 28th. And while we anticipate welcoming all students back to the high school, please be advised of a few events that are ongoing prior to the start of the school year:
Senior Portraits! Attention All Seniors and Senior Families. Remember to sign up for Senior Portraits, which are open now. Senior Portrait dates are August 21st and August 23rd, as well as September 6th. Seniors and senior families have been sent related signup information to your email. Please remember to sign up for these portraits as we need a high quality, high resolution photo for your Senior Yearbook. Senior photo signup information can be found here.
Warrior Academy! All 8th Grade Students and New NRHS Students - Student Leaders and Ms. Landry will run an orientation for all 8th grade students and new NRHS students. We call this orientation Warrior Academy, and it is a longstanding Warrior tradition. Here’s what you need to know.
Warrior Academy will be held on Tuesday, August 22nd from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Assistant Principal Landry has sent students and families follow up information
Warrior Academy consists of team building activities, exploring the high school, getting to know upperclassmen, counselors, and administrators. Students will have an opportunity to review their schedules and learn where rooms, teachers, and common spaces are located.
Warrior Academy is highly recommended, but it is an optional event.
New students and families should sign up students for Warrior Academy using this form if you plan to attend. Thanks for RSVPing to help us plan!
Schedules for All HS Students will be released on the Community Portal by 11:59 PM August 14th (tonight). Please note that counselors will be available to begin answering questions about individual student schedules on August 21st. Any questions about schedules that are emailed to counselors will be answered in the order they are received beginning August 21st.
Students with the last name beginning A-K, your counselor is Ms. Donnelly.
Students with the last name beginning L-Z, your counselor is Ms. Jasinski.
The easiest way for a student to check a schedule is to:
Visit the community portal and click on your student’s name
Click on the class to see the course and block
Special Notes on Schedules & Handbooks
Students and families are reminded that questions asked of teachers will be answered by teachers when faculty return to campus in late August. Additionally, counselors will answer questions about schedules beginning the week of August 21st, although you are welcome to email them in advance.
This evening, High School parents/guardians will see a message from schoolbrains@nrsd.org with information for accessing the community portal, and instructions for reviewing and signing off on our parent/student handbook. Thank you for reviewing and signing off on the parent/family handbook at your earliest convenience. This step is essential to ensuring your child’s participation in events and extracurricular activities as well as NRSD use of technology is not interrupted. Please note: the notice you receive in your email will look very similar to this message.
Participating in and/or Following Warrior Athletics
As we’re looking ahead to fall sports, this is a reminder that all students should register for fall sports now. Registration is open (and you can register and complete all documents here, via Family ID). With most sports beginning formal practices on either August 18th or 21st, don’t delay in getting registered! If you’re an athlete or fan of Warrior Athletics, here’s a reminder of our fall sport offerings:
Golf (Varsity: Boys)
Soccer (Varsity: Boys & Girls) (Registration Closed)
Cross Country (Varsity: Boys & Girls)
Field Hockey (Varsity: Girls)
Football (Middle School, JV, and Varsity)
Cheerleading (Varsity, Ongoing!)
We’d also like to remind you that we’ll add the HS Athletics schedule to our memos, and you can follow our most up to date Athletics Calendar, here. And if you’re unable to attend or miss a match..? Our Athletics Department has you covered: we will stream live and recorded games on our ’Gansett Athletics YouTube Channel.
Back-to-School Supplies & Materials
For those of you ready for back to school shopping, we will make some general recommendations regarding school supplies here, but please be advised that your child’s teachers will make note of any class-specific supplies recommended for the school year. Students and families are reminded that NRHS is a 1:1 school. All students grades 8-12 will be provided a chromebook with unique login and security features. Students are responsible for the care of these devices and should take them home each night for charging. NRHS teachers plan lessons each day under the assumption that student chromebooks are charged and ready for needed use.
In terms of physical supplies, recommended back-to-school supplies include:
Backpack
Writing implements (e.g., pens, pencils, highlighters)
White lined paper for binder and/or folders
Post it notes (recommended for annotations)
3 ring binder (2 inches) and/or folders per each class (students typically enroll in seven classes)
Daily Agenda/Organizer. This is particularly helpful for students tracking and organizing their student homework
Calculators - for students enrolled in Grade 8 Math, Algebra 1, and/or Algebra 2 the Math Department recommends the Texas Instruments TI-30X IIS calculator.
Please stay tuned for additional notes from us as the school year approaches. We’ll see you soon, Warriors!
