Principal’s Flyer #31: April 2, 2023

Dear Warrior Students & Families:

Happy April everyone.  Today we’re celebrating NRHS student Cole Culver, who has embarked three years running now on a walk to benefit wild African elephants and their habitat.  Not to be deterred by April showers, Cole’s 2023 walk kicked off this Saturday, with Cole and his supporters raising over $1,600’s dollars (and climbing).  Special thanks to everyone who came out, and especially Ms. Rosanne Dillon for her invaluable assistance in helping champion Cole’s cause.  If you’re interested in learning more about Cole’s third annual walk for elephants, consider visiting Cole’s African Wildlife Foundation website.  Below you’ll find pictures of Saturday’s walk as well as a list of the various people/businesses supporting Cole’s walk through donations to raffle baskets:

Congratulations and best of luck to our NRHS Color guard, which competed last weekend in the New England Scholastic Band Associations Winter guard show at Shepherd Hill.  Our Color guard placed first in the division last week and competed in the finals on Saturday winning a gold medal and placing 4th in the division. Congratulations to these outstanding students for the dedication to exceptional performance!

Mass Insight Education & Research Awards Ms. Nicole Hemlin

We are proud to announce that Mass Insight Education & Research has named Ms. Nicole Hemlin as the organization’s 2023 Lawrie A. Bertram Partners in Excellence Award recipient.  Here is the press release from the organization:

This award is in memory of Lawrie Bertram, who passed away much too soon.  Lawrie’s dedication to her students represents the standard that we all strive to achieve in our work.  When asked what she taught her students, Lawrie’s reply was always “to think.” She was a role model to all of us and, in cooperation with her family, we have established this annual award to keep her memory close to our hearts and to inspire us to be the best we can be every day in our work and community. We can think of no more deserving educator than Nicole to receive this award. - Susan F. Lusi, Ph.D., President & CEO

Ms. Hemlin will be honored for her commitment to her students and to the AP STEM and English program tomorrow, Monday April 3rd, at the College of the Holy Cross.  Bravo to Ms. Hemlin for her excellence in education.

Spring Conferences April 12th & 13th: Signups Open Now

Spring Family/Teacher Conferences will be held this year on April 12th and 13th between 11:45 AM and 2:30 PM.  Signups are now open and close at 11:49 PM on April 5th.  To sign up, please visit NRHS Spring Conferences.  Thank you in advance for making time to speak with our teachers.  Collaboration with families is extremely important to us, and we find that often even a brief conversation can help teachers sync with families to better support our students.  Thank you again for your partnership with us.

MCAS State Testing

Be advised that Grade 8 ELA MCAS testing is coming up this week.  Please see the dates below.  It is incredibly important that test takers arrive each day having had a good night’s rest, a good breakfast, and on time with a working / charged chromebook.

Grade 8 Students

  • Participate in ELA MCAS on both days: 4/4 and 4/5

  • Participate in Science MCAS on both days: 5/2 and 5/3

  • Participate in Math MCAS on both days: 5/10 and 5/11

Grade 9 Students

  • Participate in Biology MCAS on both days: 6/6 and 6/7

Grade 10 Students

  • Participate in Math MCAS on both days 5/16 and 5/17

Thanks to our sophomores for doing an outstanding job being prepared and on time.  As some of you may know, the state tracks not only MCAS scores, but also participation, so students showing up rested, ready, and on time for testing day not only helps them in consideration of scholarships like the John and Abigail Adams scholarship, but also helps our district in terms of state accountability ratings.
