🇺🇸NMS Veteran Appreciation!
Each year around Veteran's Day, NMS 5th Grade students take time to show their appreciation for Veterans and the meaning of Veteran's Day. Ms. Lisa Damon, 5th Grade Social Studies teacher, leads the students through lessons on sacrifice and giving to highlight how soldiers' efforts affect to not only the soldiers themselves, but how it impacts their families. One of the special things students do in addition to writing dozens of cards to Veterans, which are given to local Veteran groups for distribution far and wide to various Veteran organizations, is to demonstrate their understanding of sacrifice by donating some (or all!) of their Halloween candy to a supply that is also distributed to Veteran groups as a token of their thanks. Veterans were invited to NMS on Monday, November 18 and presented with these cards and a huge box of candy donated by the students. Students read meaningful poetry and Ms. Damon spoke of the purpose of their study, and how impactful Veteran sacrifices of all types are. Each Veteran also had an opportunity to speak of their service, and several voiced their appreciation to the students for the recognition. Thank you to all of the local Veterans who came to speak to our students and be recognized! Below, students listen to the veterans talk of their experiences; (middle below) students asked to stand to represent a family member who presently or previously served in any branch of the military got almost the entire auditorium on its feet; (bottom) the 5th grade presents the Veterans with their donated Halloween candy as a token of their appreciation, which was accompanied by homemade greeting cards from the students celebrating Veterans Day.

Celebrating Cultural Traditions!
Students in Mrs. Medlicott's Spanish classes created ofrendas as part of their study about the cultural significance of the major holiday celebrated in many Latin American countries, "Dia de los Muertos"! Ofrendas are memorials created to honor and celebrate loved ones, and have traditional objects and materials involved in their creation. From the description of Dia del los Muertos, or Day of the Dead: "Students were given the opportunity to create a memorial for a loved one, pet, celebrity, fictional character, or even an object that was meaningful to them and is no longer a part of their lives." These personal, and clearly meaningful creations are on display in the NMS lobby.
Code Writing in Digital Literacy
Right and below, students in Mr. Aubuchon's 6th grade Digital Literacy class work on the nuances of writing code by giving specific instructions to their classmates that should accurately land them in a specific spot. Students learned that even something that seems like an insignificant omission can greatly impact how well the program executes the command.
Calling all students interested in participating the MUSICAL NEXT SPRING!
The musical "The Little Mermaid" will be holding auditions in December! Students in grades 7-12 can audition for roles in the musical, while students in grades 5 and 6 can submit a signed parent / guardian permission slip to participate as members of the (non-speaking) ensemble. Questions? Contact Mrs. Ann Lyons, Musical Business Director at alyons@nrsd.org.
🗓 Important Information for Any Student Staying After School & Late Bus Details!
Students who remain after school must be with a school-related activity (club or sports), or meeting with a teacher. Students are not permitted to loiter on school grounds after dismissal. The district offers a late bus to students on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday which departs from the rear parking lot at 2:55 p.m. sharp. Any student looking to utilize the late bus must be aware of two important details:
The late bus does NOT follow routes of the morning or afternoon buses that bring students to and from school. Check HERE for the list of stops the late bus follows; and
ALL students riding the late bus must obtain a pass from the teacher with whom they stayed after school. Students will not be permitted on the late bus without a valid pass from the teacher the student was with after school.
😃 Get involved! Join a Club or Activity!
NMS offers several ways for students to get involved beyond the school day. Students should listen for morning announcements, read The Friday Memo, and watch the lobby whiteboard and monitor for announcements regarding club start dates, directions for joining, and when the club runs. Clubs meet right after school until the late bus
